A friend of mine who loves fiddling with games told me recently that he is trying to come up with a D&D 3.5 rewrite that won't make me puke. He's selling it to me as a point buy, without classes and minus the THACO.
He's trying to hit on my "laundry list" of hated points of pretty much any D&D variant. I know he means well, and I enjoy his creativity. I'm willing to consider looking at it when he's done because I'm a good friend, but in all honesty, it will be very hard to convince me that it's not the same stuff I've come to find so distasteful.
I understand why he's doing it- he wants to try to give me the "shared experience" of the D&D culture. He wants me, of all people, to enjoy what he enjoyed so much and what he grew up on. He wants to give me the opportunity to see things through his viewfinder. I'm really touched that he likes me that much. He's not writing it just for me, but he wants to share the end result with me for a very specific purpose.
I appreciate it- it's an interesting concept. But part of me wonders, why go to all the trouble? There are a wide variety of clones and there's so many ways to play the game without fiddling with an existing ruleset. What point does having yet another adaptation of the 'predecessor' prove?
To me, it's like riffing on Night In Tunisia- it might sound good, but why mess with it in the first place? Love it or hate it, the structure, pacing, elements, mood and performance are the "gold standard" for a certain place and time for jazz. The same can and perhaps should be said for D&D- a standard that shouldn't be emulated.
Am I totally off?

[HS6E] I'm In Love With The Girl
Last night was HS6E. I'm playing Diamond, a brick. I was having a very hard time getting any sort of handle on her personality for roleplay. Last night was a bit better overall but still not great.
In a passing moment between myself and the GM, a comment was made regarding the significant other (DNPC) for Diamond. While the comment was low key and really meant to be silly, it started little gears in my head.
Diamond is gay, and involved very heavily with a lovely Japanese woman named Nani. The GM for this HS6E game is single and in his mid 30's, and straight but very devious. He jokingly asked if Nani was hot (yes) and wore the Schoolgirl uniforms during certain moments. I replied that information was private, and he came back with "If I'm playing her, I need to KNOW this stuff!".
I didn't reply right away, but that single comment got me thinking about what Nani is like. The more I thought about her, the more she filled out in my imagination, and correspondingly, so did Diamond.
I'm now more than halfway done with Diamond's "Origin/Background Story". As it's progressed, I've discovered that Diamond is a lot deeper than I thought, and I really like it.

Painted Model Pics- Doom Reavers
These guys are not done yet. I'm really, truly terrible at flesh/faces, and I don't want to mess them up. Plus I haven't done the arms yet.
Again, you can tell that my detail work is not as good as it could be- however these guys haven't seen paint in almost 2 years so it's possible I've improved.
I absolutely LOVE the slight-green cast to the hooded Reaver. It's one of my favorite painting mistakes ever. (I intended to use Snakebite Leather in a wash as the base for his flesh, but the paint had separated and that's the color I got when I dipped my brush in.) The off color really says "Corrupted" to me.

It's Here!
The season premier of Sons of Anarchy is tonight! Don't miss this fantastic show. The writing, acting, directing, plot, development, emotional pull and soundtrack are all excellent.
Check it out here.
Something about this show evokes a strong and primal response in me. Or, maybe it's Charlie Hunnam.

[WOD] Autin by Night : Session 5 & 6 as Eile
I never did get to posting a recap from last session, and this week was sufficiently low-action enough that I'm doing both sessions in the same post.
I've decided to include some motivational information, as well as open the floor for some ideas/suggestions. I'll see how that pans out and go from there.
Session 5 starts with Eile working at the Hedge Row as a bartender/waitress. She has a new customer, "Mr. Book". (New Mage character played by FunDave) He orders several rounds of her strongest stuff. Eile is intrigued by a big spender and throws on the charm in an effort to get a bigger tip. Much chit chat and flirting goes on while Mr. Book drinks away. Eile tosses a couple back as well and goads Mr. Book on into more drinking.
TK sees the scene and becomes completely enraged with jealousy (his vice is envy). TK sits down next to Mr. Book and Eile acts in a fairly non-chalant way towards TK. [She's greedy, and working a mark for more money. Also, she feeds her Glamour pool almost entirely off emotional energy, so turmoil and conflict are very heady and she gets a major rush from them.] TK takes some offense to this and sets down a challenge with Mr. Book as to who can drink the most. Eile encourages things by putting out stronger and stronger liquor at each new round. TK succeeds in drinking Mr. Book under the table, and then stomps off in an angry huff.
Eile follows TK to his room upstairs. TK is exceptionally frustrated- angry, jealous, confused by his reactions to Eile, and to a small extent, reacting to his Geists' dislike of Eile. Eile is thrilled by this flood of emotions and moves in for more. She & TK talk for a bit, and Eile can read the desire roiling off of TK like so many waves. She's more than a little drunk from the exposure to her chosen emotion (she's a Spring Courtier) and heads in for the fnal touches.
As she & TK move towards physical consumation of the relationship, Eile asks a question that ends up being the bomb: Does TK have protection. The answer is negative. Eile avoids activity that could cause pregnancy, while still providing a measure of satisfaction to TK.
[OOC, as a rule, Changelings don't return with fertility intact. Eile is an exception to this rule; and actually has something of a mechanism to control her fertility. She's been using this mechanism quite frequently, which has made her cycle go into overdrive. She's essentially continually "in heat" at this time due to her downtime actions. She's VERY aware that she can concieve, and has NO interest in bearing pups, so has paid attention to the apparently obvious looming possibility that she may become impregnated and tried to plan accordingly.]
The romantic activities of Eile and TK are rudely interrupted by Bruce, who usually works as a bouncer and got drafted into bar duty when Eile vanished unexpectedly. Eile heads back downstairs and returns to work.
[There is a HUGE, HUGE, HUGE scene that I missed here due to dealing with some personal issues. Long story short: Werewolves see a enemy spirit nearby and try to convince the Mages (whith whom they have an alliance) to help them in a fight against said spirit. Some underhanded tactics are used and Mages reluctantly agree. Werewolves attack the big enemy spirit in another pack's territory, while several smaller spirits nearly wipe out the rest of the pack back in their own area. Mages come to the rescue with BIG HONKIN GUNS (two gun mages, ack) and other neat tricks. Spirits are subdued to some extent and chased away. The Alpha of the pack is confronted by the entirety of the other pack whose territory he violated- they proceed to KICK HIS ASS for failing to keep his pack in control and changing to Garoux in PUBLIC with WITNESSES. The other 2 of the 3 Werewolves had been TKO'd by the spirits and brought back to the bar. They are placed upstairs in TK's room. At this point I am available again and see several Mages as well as the 3rd member of the Werewolf pack for the first time. One of the Mages tries to clear everyone out of the room, there's a little talking, and then we close for the night.]
Session 6 was yesterday. I have been sick since very early Friday morning, and was not feeling great yesterday, so I was very low energy. Additionally, our group of 15 or so is down to 7, and most of the players present are lesser-knowns. Our ST asks myself, K, the Werewolf Alpha and (essentially) the Alpha Mage outside for a few minutes. He asks us to help drive storylines over to some of the "other guys" and we head in to play.
Eile starts out at home with her roommate, Bruce. She asks Bruce what he knows of Avere (the other Changeling) and how well he knows her. Bruce's reply is vague but fairly indicitave that he doesn't seem to know Avere well. Eile implies that something is "off" about her, and tries to prod Bruce into investigating her. He rebuffs gently, and Eile tries the same general tactic, with The Werewolf Alpha as the subject this time. Again, no dice seem to be rolling. Eile heads to the bar to work, hands out a drink or two to Mr. Book (a functional alcoholic), who then takes off with the Alpha Mage (Coyote Joe) for some unknown & obscure reason.
I threw a couple more lines towards Bruce, whose player is my son. Bruce rebuffs my apparent attempts to get him doing something, and I sit in the corner for the rest of the night, trying hard not to feel miserable.
Bruce gets tossed a big bone, which he shares with the Pack Alpha. The two of them confer and strategize several times over the course of the night. The ST reminds Bruce that he works with another "strange being" (Eile) but he fails to include me in the storyline. Honestly, this is sort of ok by me as I really felt crummy.
This concludes the wrap-up for Eile and her actions over the past couple sessions. Now onto the ideas/suggestions section. I could really use a kick start or two.
The other Changeling, Avere, is well established and well trusted by the majority of the group in Austin. I overheard several instances where Avere has maligned Eile or sown seeds of distrust under Eile's name among the troupe. In reality, Avere is RIGHT- there's no reason to trust Eile. She's a liar, a con artist, and a dirty rotten scoundrel. In play, Eile hasn't done anything to warrant mistrust whatsoever (except a single action thatno one else saw that made Avere mistrust and dislike her). Knowing what I know OOC- that Avere is doing her best to undermine Eile, and that Eile is not established enough to counter Avere's "good word",
What course of action would YOU pursue in my place? How would YOU play the outsider, the mistrusted, sneaky character? In theory, this shouldn't effect Eile at all. Her manipulation (3), Subterfuge (2), Persuasion (2), Socialize (3), Striking Looks (2), and Rigid Mask (2) should get her into any situation. It's overcoming a longer standing, much more "stable" character's aspersions that I'm struggling with.
My ST gave me some great ideas- I'll continue to use them, but other ideas are always welcome.

Painted Model Pic-Destroyer
Here you can see that I still need work on details and "cleanliness"- I have a lot of bleedover in tight areas, as well as un"square" corners. I'm also seeing seams from molds I probably should have filed down prior to priming/painting. However, I still love the colors.
I can't figure out how to turn that one. I tried 2 or 3 times.

Hope you like him.
Next in my "show & tell" series will be some unfinished figs that I am stuck on, but love. (Doomies, folks!) Look for them in a week or so.

Old Favorites
I recently moved, so unpacking has been a way of life for the past few weeks. I am down to 3 boxes to deal with and I have actual living space (rather than a living room stacked 6' high with boxes).
I ran across many fun things from my past either while packing or unpacking. Yesterday, I came across one of my all time favorite "characters".
I put characters in quotes because I did not play him in a tabletop RPG or a LARP. In a galaxy far far away, a long long time ago, my husband and some of our friends played in an electronic wrestling federation.
The premise was that you came up with a wrestler and wrote "promos" or "shoots" with the wrestler talking or doing something to set the scene for the matches to come. Whether your wrestler won or lost was calculated in part by the "shoots" (written roleplay sessions, essentially) and sometimes by actions described in private emails sent to the refs (the guys running the show). Those kinds of actions could include things like ambushing an opponent prior to a match, wooing girls, or set kinds of tactics for the upcoming match. Extra points were awarded for creativity, originality, and writing parts of your own matches. (The fed owners often hand wrote play by play descriptions of matches and less work was an awesome deal for them.)
I enjoy wrestling, and this looked like fun. I wanted to play, but I did not want to get accepted because I was The Dude's wife. I wanted to be accepted on my own merit. I came up with an alternate name and email, a character concept, wrote up a sample RP, and applied. I was accepted.
Thus began the life of Chad Black- also known as the Exemplar.
I played Chad for almost a month without anyone discovering my identity. I really enjoyed what I did, and I'm going to share a little bit of it here with you today.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Scene opens to a shot of a large closet. The closet is full of white dress shirts, perfectly pressed, black pants, pleated until they could stand on their own, rows of shiny black wingtips and a legion of black leather belts. The camera pans to another closet to the right of the current closet. This closet is a walk-in, and it is overflowing with silk jackets of seemingly every imaginable color. They are all obviously expensive, designer, custom items.
The camera shifts, bored with the wardrobe display, looking for the interviewee. As it continues to pan right, the Glorious Greatness is discovered standing at the huge bay window. His back is turned, and he is seemingly enjoying the sunset over the bay of some harbor.]
The Prime of Perfection is an example of the exquisite, with hair that is touched with streaks of red throughout the light yellow curls, cut to above the ears. He possesses a fine form, made neither miniscule nor mountainous.
Cameraman: Ahem…*coff*
(The Exemplar turns, with a slightly saddened look on his face at having been interrupted. He looks as if in thought and then addresses the camera with deliberation.)
tE: Oh, my apologies for any delay you may have experienced. I was observing this spectacular display of natural beauty. Thank you for being so kind as to send your cameras all this way. I simply wanted to elaborate a point.
(Gestures with his hand to the window)
Impeccable, isn't it? No amount of computer technology, mirrors, or editing can reconstruct that which the environment effortlessly produces daily. We witness this phenomenon repeatedly throughout our lives, yet few recognize the marvel of this accomplishment. So it is with so many other things in our daily lives. We see them appear in front of us, yet we do not recognize their greatness. We simply do not register them in our mental databanks, and it is our loss. I however, strive to acknowledge accomplishment wherever it occurs, in any form it may be shaped. This sunset is but a mere example of the many splendors submitted to my mental mainframe as guidelines for my giftedness.
Another example can be witnessed in ARMAGEDDON's ranks. I speak of no other than Shawn Page. He calls himself 'the Professional'. Of the many definitions of 'professional' are the words 'expert' and 'master'. These words certainly exemplify the quality of Mr. Page's talent, as was demonstrated at Cataclysm of Champions. This "Professional" came out to defeat a nemesis and odds that were stacked against his favor. He used his expert skill and his mastery of the mat to achieve the ultimate goal of many waiting in the wings of this fine establishment; the possession of the world title belt.
(The Paragon of Perfection moves away from the window in a nearly gliding motion, walking around the room, examining its stark and sterile nature. The room is consistent of the two closets, the window, and a small end table against a blank wall. The effect is strangely fitting, as the surroundings seem to fit the Definition of Delivery. He starts to speak again.)
It is not lost on one such as I that his fortune was dependent on random factors. I have not overlooked the animosity that exists between Mr. Page and Mr. Douglas. I have not dismissed the formation of the united group of men par excellent in "Professionals, INC". I am acutely aware that Mr. Douglas' cohorts outnumber Mr. Page and his collegiate companion. No, these realities are nearly branded in my cerebral capacity, and I have drawn but one conclusion. As the Prime of Perfection, the Majesty of Mastery, the Reign of Reliability, I am the prominent possibility to provide pragmatic protection to the possessor of pure professionalism. I intend to align my assistance to Mr. Page. This is of voluntary volition, without complex contracts to denigrate delivery.
When perceiving the paragon, the magnificent marvel, the euphoric entirety, one obliges to reject the remainder. If the remarkable cannot be replicated, it is upon us to enjoy and embrace that worldly wonder .So it is with myself. Enjoy me while I exemplify excellence.
(The lights in the room dim, casting slow shadows on the firm face. His expression remains motionless, as he simply snaps his fingers and the camera ….
Fades to black…
We hear a rushing wind, as if the windows have been opened, and an echoing voice proclaiming…
"I certainly will."
