I was recently asked by a friend or two to investigate Warhammer 40,000 (referred to as 40K by most) and determine if I would ever consider playing.
I borrowed a friend's book and spent some time reading it. I won't lie- it's math heavy. There are a bajillion numbers that factor into everything like whether you can hit and if you stand or sit to pee. There are numbers in every dang page and they were not obvious or self explanatory to me in any way.
I used to play (I remember the rules being MUCH simpler then). I have seen many games run and enjoy the atmosphere. I love seeing the models. I like hearing about army lists, troop options and ridiculous scenarios just as much as I like hearing about the adventures of your favorite RPG character. It's fun.
However, that 40K book made me wonder if someone had swiped my alphabet soup and blenderized it with an algebra book. There were way too many numbers for me to follow the spirit of the newest rule set, much LESS keep up with 10+ Codex and their variants to know the individual rules for my army.
I like simple. I honestly don't know the rules of too many systems I play.I roll the dice & trust the person I play to be fair with me. I am fair with them and it usually works for me.
So for now I just admire the plastic dollies and watch grown guys blow each other up. And I avoid the math.

Upcoming
I'm currently in a D20 Modern game with a Miami Vice style setting. It is as close as I have ever come to D&D and there's a lot I enjoy, and a lot I do not. This game is soon to finalize, as the GM will be moving away. (Sad! He's one of the best at his craft- the elegant story)
So on the horizon, I have a Vampire LARP as a possibility. 6th Edition Hero system is also rearing its head as an option.
I am actually IN a World Of Darkness crossover tabletop/LARP crossbreed game, but starting over with a brand new character.
I'm considering running my own game. I"m not sure about that entirely yet, but the idea has merit.
Miniatures games have also been making an appearance as a possible thing to keep me busy. I don't quite know yet, we will see.

Closing the door?
I'm not sure if it's a good idea, or if it's just self indulgent.

What's On My Mind Today
Mini-intro: I'm primarily an RPG girl, but I have some miniatures games I like, and quite a few board games that are worth my time.
I do not follow the "rules" for most gamers I know. I am kind of anti-stereotype.
I really don't enjoy D&D of any form (that is a whole different post, btw).
I'm not a huge comics fan.
I'm not a computer nerd.
I don't have a wacky fan-boy adoration of fantasy or science fiction. For the most part, I don't LIKE fantasy. Science fiction is hit or miss, depending entirely on the author, content and tone.
I don't do costumes.
And my biggest anti-stereotype, given that I am female-
I don't play because I want to "spend time" with my loved male person.
Things I DO-
I do try lots of games. I have done everything from Napoleonics to far-future sci-fi to homebrews to horror inspired table top board games to funky card games.
I do believe in a family game. My dad introduced me to gaming. I met my husband gaming. My brothers game. My sister-in-law games. My kids game.
I also believe in knowing what is and is not appropriate and making those choices for my family appropriately.
I play because it's fun. It's social. Games are highly educational. Most games make you learn math, strategy, tactics, history, culture, or all of those. (I learned to tell time, do multiplication, division & fractions because oif gaming.) Most RPGS make you learn teamwork and considering how your actions affect others. I play because I like to, and because I enjoy the people around me (for the most part).
Much of what I'll talk about here is RPG related, with some other stuff thrown in for spice.
Enjoy the adventure!
